Fibre vs wireless: how BBnet's network works

Why our home and business connections are wireless, why fibre still matters behind the scenes, and when a dedicated fibre link makes sense.

People often ask whether BBnet is fibre or wireless. The answer is both: fibre runs to our base stations, and wireless carries the connection the last stretch to your home or office.

Fibre behind the scenes

Fibre links feed our base stations across our coverage areas. Fibre carries large amounts of data with very low latency, which gives our wireless network the capacity to stay fast at busy times.

Wireless to your door

From the base station, a carrier-grade wireless link reaches a small antenna at your premises. There's no trenching, so installation normally takes less than 2 hours, and it reaches homes and estates where laying fibre would be slow or costly.

When a dedicated fibre link makes sense

Some businesses, such as large offices, hotels and hospitals, need very high capacity to a single site. For them, we can extend a dedicated fibre link to the premises on request, surveyed and quoted individually.

Our advice

For most homes and businesses, our fibre-fed wireless service is the fastest way to get online. Check coverage at your address, and talk to us if your site needs a dedicated fibre link.
